The Challenge

Crafting a Simplified Interview Practice Tool to avoid external dependencies and complex technology.

The client previously used a third-party interview practice tool but opted not to renew the license and sought to develop a simpler tool in-house.

The Client

Barclays Life Skills is an initiative by Barclays Bank designed to equip young individuals with crucial life and  employability skills.

The program offers interactive modules, workshops, and guides on its website, catering to both young people and the support networks of educators, parents, and guardians.

research

The experiences and advice young people shared in online forums and social media channels

Although we were not provided with formal research or the time to talk to young people to uncover what our audience wants from this tool, I conducted desk research that gave good insights.

  • Look up the most common general and industry specific questions
  • Write down your answers and rehearse them
  • Practice answering interview questions using the STAR method
  • Do a mock interview with a buddy or practice speaking to someone by opening the FaceTime app on your laptop
  • Creators in TikTok, and also on YouTube, make videos where they ask sample interview questions and users can pause the video to practice their answers

Exploring the competitive landscape, identifying key features and functionalities of several Interview Practice Tools

The goal was to understand how these tools guide users, provide feedback, and facilitate the recording and playback of answers. The results helped to determine which features would be suitable based on client requirements and time constraints.

design

Visualising the tool's layout and functionality

This allowed for a step-by-step exploration of screen presentation, incorporating questions, tips, and desired information. This also gave a clear understanding of the tool's appearance and functionality, aligning with the client's expectations.

the final product

Improved tool with a new visual identity

During the 3-4 weeks after I was working on the project, the team kept improving how things looked and
worked as they built the tool. Even though I wasn't involved in this part, it felt good to see most of what I
created being brought to life.

The tool launched successfully on February 2023

the impact

Positive results

The redesign of the Interview Practice Tool on desktop and being also made available on mobile had a positiveimpact on the interview practice experience. However, the data showing increase in traffic to relevant other tools was not available to me at the time of writing this.
